Environmental Awareness
BELS Environmental Policy sets out the organisation's commitment to the environment - BELS Environmental Policy 2008
BELS has implemented several initiatives to improve its environmental performance.
There are a lot of simple ways in which our office has been made more cost effective, environmentally aware and energy efficient.
Here are some of the practical things we are doing:
Energy Use:
- All office equipment including PCs & Monitors, copiers and printers are switched off every night or if not needed for some time;
- Lights are turned off whenever a room is empty;
- Equipment is only turned on when needed;
- Only enough water is boiled as needed.
Waste Minimisation / Management:
- Something is only printed out if a hard copy is really needed;
- All photocopying and publications are produced in double-sided format;
- Junk Mail and unwanted publications are cancelled to reduce the amount of waste that has to be thrown away;
- Electronic communication is used where possible to reduce printing and faxing e.g. meeting Agenda are displayed at meetings on a projector screen;
- Stationary, envelopes and paper are re-used wherever possible e.g. files, folders etc;
- A regular stationary amnesty is held where staff are asked to hand in their unused stationary for re-use;
- Items that cannot be reused are recycled wherever possible. The local council recycle some items for a nominal fee;
- Recycled paper is used;
- Disposable catering products such as plastic cups have been replaced with reusable glass items.
