Army Day
The 25th of July saw BELS collaborate with the Army to provide an ‘Army Day’, a high energy team building day for young people. One of the aims of this event is to stretch boundaries. Many young people feel that they might not be able to meet the challenges of the ‘Army Day’ and it really is tough going on the day. However, the participants feel a great sense of achievement when they realise that they actually got through the day and performed beyond their own expectations.
Building confidence to enable a young person to take on challenges in the work place can be valuable to employers too, as are the other benefits of this event, which include practical team building work and problem solving.
Activities taking place on the day included a ‘Gun Run’ which proved the biggest challenge to many in the group, as they had to move equipment across an assault course, and ‘The Indian Rope Trick Challenge’, which set the group the task of having to communicate without talking.
The group then had to negotiate ropes to lift and move a football off of a traffic cone. Sounds easy? Well it wasn’t and with forfeits being dished out for each time the ball was dropped the pressure was on!
A less strenuous challenge was to build a fire and cook up ration packs, ensuring that the ‘enemy’ could not spot smoke from the fires and give the group’s position away.
BELS would like to thank Sergeant Darren Brigden of Princess of Wales Royal Regiment 2 for co-organising the event with BELS’ Senior Project Manager, Sue Murkin, and we look forward to a re-run in September!
