BELS ‘Adrenaline Day’ – Adventure Team Building Event for Young People!

As part of our Creating Positive Futures project delivery programme, BELS organised and hosted its first ever adventure team building event for young people on the programme. A group of 20 young people, supported by five BELS staff, enjoyed archery, quad biking and paintballing and despite the torrential downpour, the event was voted a unanimous success!

Quad biking seemed to be one of the favorite activities of the day. After a quick lesson, there was the course track and an off road wood track to negotiate. Luckily everyone stayed on, albeit many came back muddier than they expected! Archery was a lesson in focus and strength and saw the girls give the guys a bit of a run for their money, proving that muscle power alone does not always result in hitting the target. Without a doubt, paintballing was the most exciting challenge to end the day and although it was close, the ‘yellow team’ won overall across the three games.

Here is what our young people had to say: 'I liked it all, but quad bikes and paint-ball the best, because I love the adrenaline and it was good fun!', said Elizabeth Smith, who excelled in her team at archery. 'Ten out of ten!' added Alex Arnold from Sutton, while Danielle Tinsley enjoyed the fact that everyone was willing to get to know each other: 'We worked as a team, I've never experienced quad biking and paint-balling before, so it was a good laugh!' BELS are planning on holding a bi-monthly activity day for all young people who commence on the Creating Positive Futures (CPF) project.

The event proved very effective in helping the young people to develop team building and leadership skills and improving retention and participation in subsequent workshops and one-to-one sessions. The intention is to integrate these events into our CPF direct delivery programme and to further develop their format.
