Born and raised in Jamaica, Dame Karlene Davis now provides professional leadership and trade union support for 95% of the 35,000 midwives as General Secretary at the Royal College of Midwives. After successfully undertaking nursing and midwifery training, she became the country’s first black trade union leader. She is also director of the World Health Organisation’s Collaborating Centre for Midwifery.
