Becoming leader of the Newham Academy of Music Youth Orchestra at the age of 18, Shirley Thompson is now an award-winning composer and conductor. She has also made a series of short films depicting social life and carries outwork multi-media workshops with young people encouraging them to compose their own music based on the history of their town.
