Money 4 Life
We are all open to potential financial tragedy but these days Young People are the most vulnerable. low income and high expectations can be dangerous combination in a world of aggressive marketing and easy credit. Sessions are available through BELS on personal finance which are tailored to learners' abilities and situations. They include PowerPoint slides, short video clips and group activities to empower young people to use money to develop their own unique potential.
Presentations are built around three key skills:
- Knowing yourself well enough to budget
- Knowing how to budget
- Knowing how to defend your budget.
An holistic approach covers both right attitudes to money as well as key financial skills. It will help individuals:
- Avoid problems that hinder careers and relationships
- Recognise pressures to borrow and spend carelessly
- Improve their ability to realise personal goals
- Enhance their financial well-being.
Specific issues covered are budgeting, current and savings accounts, using credit wisely, understanding sales pressures, identity theft and tackling money problems.

Parents would rather teach their children DIY and car maintenance than personal finance. Many schoolteachers feel disqualified from the subject by their own graduate debt. But the fact is, although you may not feel financially confident, you probably do have what it takes: a positive attitude, determination to learn the materials and basic interpersonal skills.
BELS has opportunities for you to teach teenagers in South London who have left school with few qualifications but are seeking to improve their employability through Entry to Employment and other vocational courses. This project has the support of the Bank of America. Full training will be given.
Philip Evans has prepared the course. Bank of America volunteers within DebtCred in Cheshire and District already use his materials.
This opportunity will build your own financial confidence as well as give the people you train an essential key to a successful life.
