Barnet’s Pilot Programme to Support Young People into Careers in Construction

Barnet Council’s Economy and Skills Team, has launched a pilot CSCS training programme to support some of the most vulnerable young people in the borough into sustainable employment within the construction industry. This initiative is being delivered in partnership with Storex.

Delivered by 4 Acre Training, the programme took place on a live construction site in Cricklewood, where new warehousing units are under development. The course focused on gaining certification through the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) and it combined classroom-based learning with on-site practical activities, giving the young people hands-on insight into the realities of working in construction. Participants also completed Level 3 First Aid training.

The practical approach helped the young people develop not only industry-specific skills but also essential life skills like time management, teamwork and health and safety awareness. Many entered the programme nervous and unsure but left with renewed confidence and drive. One young person reflected: “I feel proud of myself for having something to get up for. It feels like people here believe in us and want us to do well. It’s given me motivation to keep it up and get into work. I want to turn my life around.”

Another Young Person, Louis, a looked after child, said “being on this programme has made me feel really hopeful and excited about what the future holds. I have felt supported the whole way, and attending the event has given me a clearer insight on the different opportunities available in construction.”

All nine participants successfully completed the course and are now preparing for their final CSCS exam, a key credential for entering construction employment. All of them will have the opportunity to meet with developers who are actively recruiting for Brent Cross Town.
