How long have you worked for BELS?
I've worked for Barnet LA since 2015. I started working in Barnet in 1994, then moved to Haringey but returned to Barnet in 2003. I have been in various roles in schools, including BEAM, the Specialist Inclusion Service and also Barnet Early Years SEND Advisory Team.

Tell us a bit about your role
My current role is Co-Head of the Specialist Service this is the team that supports all aspects of inclusion with schools and settings. I also am Co-Head of the Early Years Send Advisory Team. This is the team that supports nurseries PVIs and families of children under five who have emerging SEND needs.
What is our favourite thing about your role?
I have many favourite parts of my roles. A big aspect is that no two days are the same. I get to work with children, families, schools, and settings. Another aspect which is incredibly rewarding is the collaboration involved in developing resources and delivering training that supports inclusive practice across the borough. I get to meet some great people and see lots of ideas that I can then share with others.
What do you find challenging?:
There are many changes in the SEND system at present which present challenges for schools families and settings. Keeping abreast of these and knowing I'm giving the right advice can be challenging at times. I always try to have the approach - How can I help?
Which of our BELS values resonate mostly with you, and why?:
Championing diversity and inclusion because this is central to all the work that we do. It is important to me that our work supports young people and families to feel valued and be part of the Barnet community.
What are your interests/hobbies outside of work?
I'm a member of a local drama group and enjoy producing various plays at a local pub in Highgate. This is huge fun and a great relaxing hobby.
What is the most fun you have had at work recently?
A recent highlight has been the Early Years Parents/Carers and Settings SEND conference. This was a great opportunity to bring together a wide number of different professionals and to reflect on how we can support our Early Years settings and families to develop their inclusive practise and support in the home. It was multiagency, fun and feed back from all stakeholders was really positive.
What’s the one piece of advice you would give your 13-year-old self?
It’s OK to be different.
Where’s your favourite place to holiday and why?
We had some great family holidays at a farm in Devon and it will always remain a favourite place a little comfort in a busy world.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
